Running is a mental shower, meditation, and the best way to explore.

Wake up early to run… I love running cities and exploring them on foot. Simply pick a cool spot on the map and figure out roughly how to get there, explore, and then find your way back. I did that in Split and Slano, Croatia earlier this year and had to do it again in Tokyo.

Honestly, I am not a big first thing in the morning go for a run guy normally. I love doing it with friends back in Portland but for the most part, I would rather drink coffee, write, work on podcasts, or do something creative first in the morning then train. Maybe that will change soon…

When on holiday the training comes first. Making the most of my time/energy and having cool experiences during the day I typically train first thing in the morning.

Day 1 was a brisk 38 degrees with the bluest sky you’ve ever seen. Sunny, no clouds, and that “holy shit I’m in Tokyo feeling.” Check out my Strava here

Pulled up the baseball stadium on the map, noticed there was this park on the way, and sent it.

Let’s get this bread.

Running thoughts #2… How great is ball? Is a question inspired by Yogi Roth and KC (Kevin Carroll). It is what pops into my head first when I think of how spectacular sports stadiums are in different cities. Every single city creates a place for their most popular sporting events to happen. Then every stadium is created uniquely. It’s spiritual and sacred. Where people go to connect and feel alive about something bigger than them. Each stadium has its own personality vibe and edge.

Runnings thoughts #3… The land of Misogi, Moai, and Kaizen. Misogi is a legend about doing something challenging/spiritual experience one day per year and the impact is so great that is felt each day for the rest of your year.

Moai was inspired by Brandon Dang, writer of the Hot Tub Talks Newsletter and previous guest on my podcast. Moai is a Japanese concept that directly translates to “meeting for a common purpose”. In this tradition, you’re grouped up with a few friends in your childhood, and that squad is your squad for life, supporting you socially, emotionally, financially, and being there for all the ups and downs of life.”

Kaizen. Incremental daily improvements & progress.

Those three words would ping around in my head as I was breathing in cold air, stopping/starting at different crosswalk lights, and mobbing around the Imperial Palace.

1. Was thinking about what life look like at 60 if I keep doing one Misogi per year.

2. Where am I practicing Moai in my own life? Deep meaningful conversations with who? Clear, direct, & often?

3. Kaizen: Daily Deposits keep them intentional, ritual-based, not automated habits.

Closing thoughts… Running in Tokyo was so cool because I could soak in the culture by observing. Recognizing how different it is than what I have experienced in the US. Tons of elementary school kids in yellow hats confidently running down the city streets to school. Tokyo felt super safe! So many people out running on a sunny Tuesday morning. It was fascinating to see +20 people just getting fit and moving around. No one waves, says hi, or makes eye contact like running in the States but I kept dishing out thumbs up.

I can’t imagine not being able to run & not have my health. As Naval has said and Jay Yang has made more popular “Fit body, calm mind, a house full of love, meaningful work, and enough wealth not have to worry about it.”

Quick update from Tokyo with Devin and Zenka. Appreciate you checking out the newsletter. If you have had some interesting thoughts while training, walking, or running recently send them over.
