What’s up, everyone! Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

Yesterday I rocked a 30-mile run in less than 5 hours. Why? Sometimes you just got to see if you can do crazy shit… Forest Park is an absolute icon of the city of Portland. Picture a massive forest just rolling into the northwest part of the city. Filled with tons of trees and maintained trails. Then, whatever you pictured times the number of trees by 100. It is a freaking beauty.

FULL SEND END TO END. 30-mile Wildwood trail that covers the entire park, ending in the city & Washington Park. So we had a throwdown. Katie is one of the student-athletes on the Women’s Cross Country team. She set it up, had me commit, and then we let it rip Saturday morning.

The body is a little beat up now, was a lot more used to the road running than the trails, but we rocked it. The first 21 miles were just Katie and me. Then some other Pilots jumped on board to run with us the final few miles, shout out to Stina and Jona!

You've got to do the things you want to do.

See what you are capable of.

Test yourself and get some data points.

I want to be in a position where I can decide to do something and physically do it. Be at the point in my life where I can go full send, absolute body 30 miles (got bodied too), and be okay after. “Okay” is a rough definition. Needed some carbs after, so I didn’t bonk but water, donuts, a PBR tall boy, good vibes with incredible people fixed a lot.

TAKEAWAYS.

  1. People - it is way easier doing things & becoming who you want to be as a collective. Katie, the whole time, Stina, Jona, all my buddies, I would see later that day. Playing pickleball with the squad afterwards, and BBQ with the entire squad. Helps you do big things & helps with the recovery. I was smiling the entire time

  2. Daily Deposits - I was ready for 30 because of the marathon training (ran the Eugene Marathon exactly 4 weeks ago). And I was ready because of all the daily deposits of training that I have put in over the years. The workload is starting to build up. Like stacking pieces of paper or layers upon layers of paint. May not be in 100-miler shape, but I am in 30-miler and a marathon in 4 weeks shape.

  3. Less than ideal is still possible - not going to lie, had a few beers and a burger at 9 pm the night before with the fellas at Pay Master. Slept 6 hours and still sent it. I wasn’t in the optimal condition to run - be we are capable of more than we realize. Not saying everyone should crush burgers/beers before 30. - Next time I prob won’t - but I am capable of doing incredible things even when things aren’t optimal.

  4. On A Mission - to get clearer on my mission. See what I'm capable of physically, mentally, and spiritually. On a mission to be a seeker full of wonder, curiosity, and adventure. While also helping others get clarity on their life mission (or chapter).

Things are never “optimal”. You can just do things. Take action. Consistently. Life starts getting pretty fun when you stop waiting for optimal and start letting it rip.

It was special to do that run with a bunch of Pilots since I have been coaching there for over 8 years and did it on the day the Bare Performance Nutrition (BPN) hosted their first annual backyard ultra marathon. You rock 4.2 miles in 60 minutes until you’re the last man standing.

Cheers to 30 miles. Cheers to a great weekend. Cheers to YOU for taking the time to read this one!

Keep stacking those daily deposits and making every day the best day of the year, until tomorrow.
