Ferate's 5 Minute Friday: Intern Like A Pro.

Rokke Performance Therapy Visit + Some Wisdom.

What’s good! FINAL WEEK OF JUNE & Q2! Crazy, crazy, crazy…

Thanks for tuning in this week! This week I had the chance to visit Rokke Performance Therapy! One of the best training facilities in Portland & full of incredible people!

Was amazing being able to observe high school/college athletes train, my friends in the thick of coaching sessions, and learn. Nate Graham (FOLLOW HIS CRAFT & ART HERE) had me speak with their three interns for the summer. Share a little guidance going into their first coaching internship that is 10 weeks long.

Today I will share with YOU, what I shared with them. And in writing this maybe it will help both of us get more clear on applying this to our own life. I need to take time to write more of these “answers” out.

LESSONS.

  1. Start acting like the position you want not the position you are in.

    1. Doesn’t mean step on toes or be someone you are not. More about get clear on what qualities, attributes, and skills do the head strength coaches have. If you want to be a grad assistant, college strength coach, or director of performance at a private facility why not start building those skills now instead of waiting?

    2. Approach the session as if you are a head coach too. It isn’t just oh I need to act like an intern coach who is still in their undergrad. View it from the head coaches perspective.

  2. What kind of person do you want to be at the end of your 10 week internship?

    1. Who do you want to become? Who are you becoming right now based on your current actions? With the answers of those three questions work backwards from that “end goal”.

    2. What are 3 attributes you admire in different coaches that you look up to?

    3. Introjection: Write out 3 attributes that you want to absorb and embody. Can be from 3 different people. Look at them daily, make them top of mind, and practice them often.

  3. Be Curious.

    1. What are you the most curious about right now? TOP 3

    2. What are you the most curious about in performance coaching/athlete development right now? TOP 3

    3. Cultivating curiosity and being more curious is a skill. Practicing and sharpening it takes time/reps. Stay curious my friends.

    4. Easy thing to do when you feel stuck and don’t know what to ask??? - ask a coach what are they most curious about right now? What can they not stop thinking about?

If all you remember is this then you are good to go. Screenshot this and save it to your phone to refer back to often.

Quick Recap & Action Plan Moving Forward.

  1. Identify attributes that you want to embody of the position/role you want. Act like that now.

  2. Who do you want to be/become in 3 months? Work backwards & take action.

  3. Cultivate your curiosity.

  4. Read Comfort Crisis & Atomic Habits

Thank you for checking out this quick check in and some wisdom that I wish I would have known during my undergrad internships. If you loved, hated, or were confused by anything all you got to do is tell me!

Keep stacking those daily deposits and making every day the best day of the year until tomorrow…
