Being Curious Is A Superpower. Being Curious Is Courageous And Other Lessons From Chris Williamson

  • How can we be more curious?

  • How can we leverage curiosity?

  • Why do some people lose it?

  • Can we ignite that fire again?

  • Who do you look up to, that inspires curiosity in you?

Chris Williamson has had a tremendous impact on my life and inspired me to FULL COURT PRESS/ENGAGE 8 ALL OUT BLITZ PURSUE WHAT I AM CURIOUS ABOUT AND SHARE IT IN PUBLIC. I have always been genuinely curious about things and the question of “What do you want to want?” put me over the edge.

I have discussed this question many times. It’s one of the biggest driving forces for my writing and podcast.

Backstory: Chris Williamson is now the host of the Modern Wisdom Podcast. In his 20s he worked as a nightclub promoter in the UK, was a male model for 10 years, and was on the first season of Love Island. Then, in his late 20s, challenging questions, and relentless curiosity led him to stop and think about what did he really want out of life.

Professional party boy or start climbing the mountain of a more fulfilling life?

Now one of the top podcasts on a range of topics. This week is 5 things I can’t stop thinking about from his episode with Nick Bare. One of my favorite things is when a podcast host jumps on podcasts to be the guest. Being able to hear them discuss ideas from a little different perspective.

5 things I can’t stop thinking about from Nick Bare & Chris Williamson’s conversation.

1. Being Curious is a Superpower

Nick Bare asked “What happens when we stop being curious?

Chris’ Response: “If it was me, and that curiosity went away I have no idea what would be left. It is weapons grade, pharmaceutical grade the desire that I have inside to understand myself and the world around me.”

Nick Bare & Chris Williamson.

One of my favorite parts of this conversation is that it all circled around podcasting being the excuse to be professionally curious. The majority of what Chris has built since his 20-year-old days to now has been because of curiosity. He highlighted the point that being curious is a superpower, it can truly change your life. When we embrace being curious we also embrace being courageous. It takes courage to ask people great questions not only in podcasting but in everyday life.

I loved his two examples of when he was at a party he couldn’t stop thinking about why half the people leave their shoes on when coming in the house and the other half (him included) took their shoes off.

Even the stats he has been diving into on why young people aren’t dating. 85% of women want me to make the first move, 50% of men are afraid of being seen as creepy, and 20% of Gen Z’ers said men who approach them are harassing them.

2. What Do You Want To Want?

This was the big-hitting question that I heard a few years ago and continue to bring up over and over again. Not just knowing what I want, but truly and deeply knowing what it is that I want to want outside of society pressure or influence.

Chris shared three big things in this space:

  1. The need to design your life & your wants. He asked the simple question: Are you running away from a life you don’t want, instead of running towards a life you do want?”

  2. From James Smith: “If you are succeeding at a job you hate, imagine how successful you would be at a job you loved.”

  3. The chip on the shoulder and proving people wrong (Pain) is the activation. Proving yourself right is when it transcends to longevity.

3. Consistency and Success.

Consistency is a common attribute of success. The important thing to remember is that it will not guarantee success but not being consistent can almost guarantee you won’t be.

4. Rogan’s Difficulty & Value Conflation.

Just because something is difficult to achieve doesn’t mean it’s valuable. Was an observation and an aphorism Chris had taken away from his conversation with Joe Rogan. It complements the “want to want” question so well. Are we just slipping into our cultural desires?

“Look at the car he is driving, look at the watch he is wearing, look at the girl he’s with. Just because it’s difficult doesn’t mean it’s valuable or worthwhile.”

Joe Rogan

Are you climbing the mountain of external validation? Is the fancy car for your fulfillment or just for the perception of others? Just because it is difficult to get a $100,000 car does it really mean it is valuable to you?

5. Perspective On Fatherhood.

The goal is not simply just to give your children the foundations, so they can do things without you there.

The goal is to give them the tools to do things better than you ever could.

Highly recommend his episode with Joe Rogan if interested in more. He is doing some really cool podcast production projects as well with Modern Wisdom on YouTube.

Best day of the year, until tomorrow…
