What’s up, everyone? I am giving you something interesting for you to bring up around the dinner table tonight! Appreciate you being here, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and let’s get into this one!

Struggling with finding meaningful gifts during the holiday season? The quest for a thoughtful present without breaking the bank can be challenging. I am right there with you, wanting gifts to carry significance, while also avoiding unnecessary clutter around the house.

Then it hit me – books. Reflecting on the impact they've had on my life, the knowledge gained, and the potential to influence others, it became a no-brainer. For the past few years, I've been gifting books with the hope of leaving a lasting impression.

A few years ago I stumbled across this Icelandic Tradition called Jolabokaflod, which translates to "Christmas Book Flood,". Wait, a book flood? I am hooked. Long story short, in 1944 after the economic crash in Europe due to World War II, neutral Iceland had a restriction on the majority of goods and imports. However, one thing that wasn’t impacted was their finances and the availability of paper. With a rich literary history, this led to the tradition of gifting books during Christmas. Tonight on Christmas Eve, Icelanders will exchange books and spend the night engrossed in their newly acquired reads.

High level of restriction on goods + above average Icelandic spending + an abundance of paper + rich literary history + Christmas = Jolabokaflod

In 2021 it was James Clear's Atomic Habits. Last year, I opted for one of my all-time favorites, The Almanack of Naval Ravikant: A Guide to Wealth and Happiness. This year I’ve decided to gift Dr. Michael Gervais’ new book, The First Rule of Mastery: Stop Worrying About What People Think of You.

Dr. Michael Gervais is one of the world's top High-Performance Sports psychologists for clients such as Olympians, Red Bull Space Jump Project, Musicians, and many more elite athletes across pro sports. He also is the founder of “Finding Mastery” a high-performance psychology consulting agency and host of the “Finding Mastery Podcast”. Below are 5 quotes from his book that I loved.

Our fear of people’s opinions (FOPO) is a hidden epidemic and may be the single greatest constrictor of human potential.

If you are not creating from a place in alignment with who you are, you are just a great performer, not a master.

The foundational measuring stick for mastery is what each of us, individually, is capable of becoming - and we don’t know what that looks like until we embrace the first rule of mastery.

Our real power lies in being able to choose where to place our attention and having the mental skills to do so.

“A person’s ability to engage in a genuine connection is inversely proportional to their need to prove themselves.”

Mark Manson, author of Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck.
