What is up people!!! Let’s freaking go building up some writing momentum from the 4th of July and it being the best month of the year (so far). You are in the right place to get your weekend started with this week’s FERATE 5!

This week is 5 things that I can’t stop thinking about specifically from podcasts. David Senra, host of the Founders Podcast has said countless times, “Learning isn’t memorizing, learning is when it changes your behavior.” My challenge is to have a few of these change my behavior not just share and move on.

Let's dive in.

1. LIFESTYLE PERFORMANCE: Danny Miranda & Polina Pompliano from 11:15 Time Stamp

Most recently Polina Pompliano released her new book, Hidden Genius, which I am fired up to check out soon! It has been cool to see the creation from Substack newsletter to hard copy.

In their podcast conversation, Danny asked what it was like writing a book at the same time as being a new mother (Standing ovation for that achievement by the way). She started writing the book when her child was 3 months old.

“When you are not sleeping, you don’t think about writing, you think about sleeping.” Polina Pompliano said. Danny added, “Creativity is something that happens when your baseline levels are met.”

These two statements instantly made me think of lifestyle performance! Something that I am constantly talking to the student-athletes I coach every single day. Performance isn’t just for athletes though. We are all working towards performing at our best. Sport, work, workouts, in our relationships, a lot of opportunities to be at our best! Maximizing our lifestyle performance is vital for getting the most out of life’s experiences and creating timeless work.

Oh, you know that low battery alert on your iPhone? Low battery mode or tough it out with 20% left? That is not the best spot to be in for using your phone and the same goes for your body. Tough to be creative, have FUN, fully enjoy life’s experiences, or be a great friend with that going off.

When I think about lifestyle performance I think about.

  1. Sleep

  2. Fuel

  3. Movement

  4. Sunlight

  5. Designing your days (Planning how you want to spend your energy)

  6. Energy > Time Management (How you actually spent your energy.)

2. LEX FRIDMAN & CHRIS VOSS (2:03:35 Time Stamp)

Chris Voss wrote one of my favorite books of all time, Never Split The Difference. That book changed the way I looked at conversation, connection, and communication. Need a raise at work or want to ask better questions? Amazon prime this bad boy and read it! He was recently on Lex’s podcast and in the last 10 minutes he had advice specifically about knowing your core values, living them out, and actually sticking to them.

“Core values are what you stick to that cost you money.”

Michael Mogill

You know it really matters when your decision is costing you something and you choose to stick to it any ways. Sacrifice your values for an extra $1,000 or $10,000 well… is it really a core value then? This one made me stop and think for a while. (actually still thinking on this one).

The important part of the quote isn’t just defining your core values. It is also defining and understanding cost. It isn’t just money, it could be costing you time, your morals, or being a less version of your true self.

Honestly, I want to write something crazy deep, meaningful, and life-changing about this quote but really what I need to do is get this out in the world. Get it out there to connect with other people about this to see how it hits with them.

It makes me ask what are my core values, REALLY? Difference between saying them and the ones that I would actually stick to my guns about.

What are my core values and my guiding principles?

When have they been tested?

Get to work Ferate! Get to work on this.

3. Nick Bare & Sam Parr on the Nick Bare Podcast.

Sam Parr is the legend from MFM that if you are a regular reader of my newsletter you have heard me bring him up often. Nick Bare is the founder of BPN Supplements and host of the Nick Bare Podcast.

Somewhat fitting with the quote above, Nick shared this quote that his creative director had on his desk.

“Lack of intentionality leads to repetition of what is easiest.”

This short little reminder has been sticky for me. If we aren’t intentional we slide back into the groove of what may be easiest for us in that moment. Makes you ask on top of the cost and core values question, where am I lacking intentionality?

Where am I being world-class intentional in my own life?

4. Team Captain in 3 Years. Eli Morse on The Bryant Ferate Podcast.

Some self-promotion for my podcast here but this one is too good not to share. The legend himself, Eli Morse came on to the podcast and dropped some bombs from his 5-year career as a pitcher for the Portland Pilots.

“If I told you that 3 years from now, you were a team captain, how would you want yourself to act right now? How would that inform your decision-making if the future you came back and said hey your a team captain and the team goes how you go, you’re the leader. How would that impact your actions right now?”

This applies to not only those freshmen pitchers and for what they want their collegiate careers to look like. This is for all of us. Projecting out into the future who we want to become and then asking ourselves the tough questions.

If I told you that you would be… how would you want yourself to act right now?

  • Married 3 years from now

  • A dad 3 years from now

  • Director within your current job

  • Momento Mori: Only have 3 years left to live.

Grateful to share this one because Eli has impacted my life so much. Can’t wait to see what this guy chooses to become and who he impacts along his journey!

5. The Mindset with Muscle featuring Sahil Bloom (1:11:50 Time Stamp)

Sahil shared insight on the need to stop trying to change people that aren’t trying to change. He posed the question, are you chasing after people who are running away from you with their actions? People don’t change because of your actions, people only change when they want to change. They ACTUALLY have to want to change. Jay Alderton shared the Aesop Fable about the wind & sun, which also had me appreciating the power of storytelling.

The strong north wind and sun were in a debate over who is the strongest and most powerful. The wind declares he is the strongest and they will test it by who can get this old man to remove his cloak.

The wind begins to blow harder and harder causing the old man to clinch on tight to his cloak. After a while, the wind stops with no luck of breaking the old man’s grips and it is the sun’s turn. The sun starts to shine and shine. Over time it becomes so hot the old man takes his cloak off and sets to the side.

The lesson is instead of using brute force to change people like the wind, we must shine. Just shine through being yourself and who you want to become. No need to try to strong wind people, just shine.
