This past week for Thanksgiving I drove back home to spend some high-quality time with my parents (Kitsap County represent)! During the 3-hour drive, there was a lot of quiet time in the car to just think. I started thinking about how grateful I am for my parents. Then this question just hit me…
What is timeless? What continues to stand the test of time?
I was inspired to think about what is timeless because of my childhood home. My dad built our house by himself with a little help from a few of his high school students back in 1984 and still lives in it today. 39 years ago… INSANE! Shout out to you pops!
I realize day after day how unique this truly is. Born, grew up, and every memory is in that house out on Green Mountain, Lake Tahuyeh, and the edge of Kitsap/Mason County. I have never known anything different. The house is just like my parents, a consistent rock to lean on in my life and my friend’s lives. Words in this newsletter don’t do it justice. Hard to explain the level of gratitude I have for the “home” my parents have created and cultivated over the years.
So back to the question, what is timeless?
What was incredible back then and still incredible now?
What was incredible back in 1984 and just simply normal now? For example, the first thing that popped into my mind was typing. My mother was a typing teacher back in the day. Typewriters, then computers, and now we have laptops and our phones. Words per minute was incredible then and now it is just an everyday skill that literally 10-year-olds are professionals at on iPads.
What was normal then and incredible now? My dad built our house by hand all on his own. Maybe not the norm in the 80s but a lot more normal then, compared to now. 3 bed 2 bath with a 2 car garage. Then added a loft 4th bedroom, a new deck, a few new sheds for the yard, and more all on our own.
So what is standing the test of time? What experiences, actions, decisions, attributes, qualities, and lessons continue to be evergreen?
One of my great friends, Noah Cracknell first pointed this idea out to me on my podcast. He is in the pursuit of writing about timeless things over timely things. Timeless things stick with us forever, timely ideas hit the news cycle and then get replaced by another timely idea.
It makes me think about how my dad was drafted into the military. Such a ridiculous thought if applied to this current moment in time. I don’t think the military draft stood the test of time. (Unless a few things all pop off at the exact same time.) Getting drafted out of high school into the Vietnam War is such a foreign thought and experience for people nowadays. You can barely make a joke on Twitter or Instagram without getting canceled by some group and a bunch of social media bots.
I mean Andrew Schulz had trouble sharing his comedy special, Infamous, because people were offended. A military draft wouldn’t stand a chance.
I wanted to leave you with this, to ponder, to think on this week & weekend. I have been loving Jay Yang’s writing as of late and he shared this Naval Ravikant quote.
“When you look back on your life in that final moment, you’ll wish you’d spent more time on the timeless and less time on the temporary and there are very very few timeless things.”
