Future Proof You: Developing Our Perpetual Skills & Making A Future Investment In Yourself
No matter what your current role or next step in your career there are timeless, perpetual skills that are the foundation of being successful.
When these perpetual skills are developed and refined over time they can become one of the greatest returns from your role. No matter if it is your dream job or not, the role is providing you opportunities for repetition.
There is a hierarchy when investing financially in many professions. Many organizations emphasize being "people first", "maximizing the experience", or working towards specific long lasting impact. A lot of financial support is directed towards tangible things that can be physically seen such as equipment, technology, buildings, events, gear, and other physical items. With this approach it is easier to see where the investment is going in the short term.
How can we evolve?
CFO asks CEO: “What happens if we invest in developing our people and then they leave us?”
CEO: “ What happens if we don’t, and they stay?”
We evolve by investing in others development and in focusing on developing these everlasting skills in ourselves. Then we can not only maximize our abilities within our current role but also grow to be even further prepared for the next step in our personal journey.
Think, Write, & Speak Clearly (Communication)
Ability to Have Difficult Conversations (Conflict Resolution)
Critical Thinking (Problem Solving & Asking Good Questions)
Connection, Compassion, & Building Relationships (Top Down & Bottom Up)
Ability to Negotiate
Ability to Rethink
Mental Models (How To Think & Application)
Curiosity
I look forward to seeing how this list evolves for me. What are your perpetual skills that you are working on right now? Potentially skills that you practice in your current role and can leverage when taking the next step in your career. I am curious to hear what skills you would add, remove, agree, and disagree with from the list above.
My hope is this writing creates a space for deeper discussion on this topic; ranging people at the pinnacle of their career path, managers at the top, to people leading upwards through their actions in entry level positions.
Best day of the year until tomorrow.
