Our college experience in weeks & how to define your daily deposit?

What’s up everyone welcome back to another week of daily deposits! Appreciate you taking the time to subscribe and check out the newsletter. Below is my training documented across the week where I am making daily deposits into my physical health.

Daily deposits aren’t about trying to save the world with one singular workout. It is more of an investment into my long-term health and being able to tap into some of that compound interest/dividends in the future.

With daily deposits, it doesn’t only come back to physical investments. It can be anything that you are working towards being consistent with. Maybe it is the daily deposit of 5 pages of reading per day, 2-minute meditation practice, or even just taking the time to reach out to a close friend via call or text for the next 30 days.

The whole point of daily deposits is to compound consistent habits and figure out what is that we truly want! Answering the question “What do I want my daily deposits to be?” through taking action & iterating.

The 2nd part that I have been thinking about a lot is the idea of “weeks” to measure time. If you want to learn more check out last week’s newsletter HERE. BANG! Basically applying those lessons of “weeks” to other things because when we are aware of how much time we have left we strive to take more advantage of it. You have 3 days in Sevilla, Spain what are you going to do? Plan out and take advantage of all that time. Same idea as if you are only in a major city for one night. You can’t do it all but you naturally time-block everything to make the most of it. Here is an example of what 90 years looks like in weeks thanks to Tim Urban.

Also to put it into perspective 4000 weeks (76 to 77 years) is roughly what a NBA arena looks like at 20% capacity…. sheesh…. Top 10 largest NBA arenas sit around 19 to 20,000 fans.

So what has been on my mind is can we do that for student-athletes? One thing I have been working to do is remind athletes how many workouts we have left before we start the next block of training. That could be summer training ending for women’s basketball or the first official day of team training for men’s soccer. Weeks, numbers of sessions, and opportunities left are all just reminders to make the most of today. Make the most of our time by deciding how we want to spend our energy.

Just a few thoughts…

  • 4 years is 208 weeks

  • 8 Semesters is 128 weeks

  • Add in a few summers in there. One summer block of training is about 6 weeks…

  • or let’s say you get a redshirt and get to toss in a 5th year because of COVID so an additional 32 ish weeks to your college career.

  • Men’s soccer season is 12 weeks (a few more if you make the NCAA tourney)

You have time to develop, but we also want to make the most of that time with experiences and BEING WHERE YOUR FEET ARE. What is even crazier is that I was only thinking about it through the lens of a student-athlete. This applies to all students. That chemistry class you hated flies by but also is a 1/8 of your college experience. How can we make the most of the time given and our energy? Not too sure how I feel about all this but I think that perspective helps you discover what it is you truly want to want.

That is what this newsletter is for. Deliver value to you and give you insight into my process of figuring that out for myself.
