Athlete, Artist, Entrepreneur, & Year Defining Moments.

The point is to have fun "figuring it out," not to have it all "figured out."

When was the last time you had a year-defining moment?

Towards the end of the year, you start to reflect on what went great in 2024, what you can improve, who you want to see more often, where you can grow, and more. My favorite way to reflect is going through my Google Cal paired with the photos in my camera roll. This year is a little different because I used Jesse Itzler’s Big Ass Calendar to help reflect, learn, and grow from all 2024 had to offer.

The reflection is good because it can drive growth and behavior change. Sorting through the entire year filters out that one thing. That one year-defining moment. What Jesse Itzler and author of the book Comfort Crisis, Michael Easter, calls a Misogi.

Misogi is a legend about doing something challenging/spiritual experience one day per year, and the impact is so great that it is felt each day for the rest of your year. It defines your year. Check out that link for my writing about recently visiting Tokyo, Japan.

Zach Pogrob Obsession… tweeted recently about defining his 2023, 2024, and the upcoming 2025. I love his breakdown of pursuits, purpose, and obsession with these three mediums. Artist, Athlete, & Entrepreneur. Can you fit your aspirations/projects/progress into these buckets? Do these feed the flame of your obsession?

Social media, writing, YouTube, building out the idea of Obsession

Marathons, weekly running volumes, overnight ultras, changes in body comp

Entrepreneur is the what’s next challenge.

Currently, my life is broken down into those categories very well. It is something I can strive to improve. I do see where I can express “Art” through writing, podcasting, and coaching. “Athlete” running, lifting, jiu-jitsu, and daily deposits. Then, the “Entrepreneur” area is where I can grow the most, making the art and athlete into more of a business delivering value to others.

So now what? How do I define my years as clean as Zach? Here is how I have viewed it using the inspiration of Misogi and year-defining moments.

Writing this out helps me reflect on the growth and experiences I have had and get more clarity on how I want to evolve in the future. Life is funny. It is one of those things that you keep trying to figure out, but when do you ever figure it out? Don’t think that endpoint comes. It is more of a process of having fun and enjoying the process of trying to “figure it all out.”

Going to be pretty sick if I keep doing this and writing about it each year. 27 more until I’m 60.

If you are connected with this in any way, please hit me up and let me know. It means a lot when you reach out! Keep stacking those daily deposits and making every day the best day of the year until tomorrow.
